It is with great pride that the QMEA launched the “QMEA Teacher of the Year Award” in 2008. This annual recognition aims to support the work, effort and achievements of colleagues working in music departments in schools across the province. It is the QMEA’s belief that the work of many private teachers is supported by the students’ participation in a healthy and motivating music program. One can also give countless examples of students who were motivated to begin private lessons because of their positive, engaging musical experience in their school.

In the past, little effort was made to create connections, for the benefit of the learners, between
school music educators and private music teachers. As our Minister of Education mandates school music teachers to involve students in a variety of musical experiences in the classroom, the link between private and classroom instruction must be strengthened in an effort to keep the performance aspect of music alive and positive in the children’s musical education. In this respect, QMEA is spearheading initiatives to create links between all people working in the field of music, especially private music teachers and including parents and students. It is by the synergy of like-minded individuals and supporters of live and active music-making that music will truly survive as part of our students’ education.

The QMEA executive is actively searching for an endowment donor in order to warrant minimal financial support to the recipient(s) of the “QMEA Teacher of the Year Award”. The award will then be named after the endowment donor.
